Accessibility

Yak Back Foundation exists for people who communicate differently, so this website has to work for everyone who visits it: on a phone, with a keyboard, with a screen reader, with a switch, or with plain reading.

What we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across yakback.org. In practice that means text you can read at 4.5 to 1 contrast or better, buttons and links you can reach and see with a keyboard, targets large enough to hit with a finger or a switch, no content that moves or flashes on its own, alt text on images that carry meaning, and pages written in plain language.

Where we are

The site was rebuilt in September 2026 on an accessibility-ready theme with these goals in mind. Known limits we are still working on: some older blog posts use images without full descriptions, board photographs on template pages describe the board in general terms rather than listing every button, and the download files themselves open in TouchChat or Proloquo2Go, whose own accessibility is set by those apps.

About the templates

Every template is built on the standard WordPower 60 grid so that core words stay where a communicator already knows them. Buttons follow the Fitzgerald color key, use the device’s own symbols wherever one exists, and put a feelings page one tap from the home board. If a template is hard for your child to use, that is a defect we want to hear about.

Tell us

If anything on this site or in a template is hard to use, email info@yakback.org or use the contact page. Say which page or template and what got in the way. We read every message and we fix what we can, usually within a few days.
